Coming of Age at the End of the World: An Existential Toolkit for the Climate Generation, with Sarah Ray

Event Date:

Wednesday, December 4, 2019 - 12:00am
  • Capps Forum on Ethics and Public Policy

The featured speaker for the Fall Capps Forum on Ethics and Public Policy, Professor Sarah Jaquette Ray (Humboldt State University) considers ways to deal with climate anxiety. Drawing on ten years' experience leading and teaching in college environmental studies programs, Ray has created an "existential toolkit" for the climate generation in her book, A Field Guide to Climate Anxiety: How to Keep Your Cool on a Warming Planet. Combining insights from psychology, sociology, social movements, mindfulness, and the environmental humanities, Ray explains why and how we need to let go of eco-guilt, resist burnout, and cultivate resilience while advocating for climate justice. In this lecture, Ray discusses what she learned writing the book, and what we all might learn from the climate generation.

Co-sponsored by the Department of Environmental Studies, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary.
